 My Review:

Breathing in Bold is about a woman named Kat who is mourning the sudden loss of her husband, RJ. There are moments in her day to day where she feels that he is with her. It turns out that she was right and that her feelings were not unfounded.  One day, seven years later, RJ miraculously appears back in the flesh to deliver a special message to the world.
RJ’s message is centered upon our need to pause, reflect and breathe deeply before taking action. He wants us to know that the needs of the body are fleeting and immaterial. RJ believes that when one realizes that his body is merely a vessel for his soul, his focus shifts to selflessness.  Fate and spiritual existence, these are the things that matter in life. As RJ works with his family to convey this message to the world, there are evil forces that will stop at nothing to curtail the significance of his purpose.

The book is articulately written with a single plot line centered on RJ’s quest to deliver his message to the world.  I was moved by the author’s efforts to encompass all religious beliefs and to spotlight the spirituality that exists in every religion. What a relief to know that our loved ones who have left this world are still with us, guiding us and preparing us for the day when we will all be reunited. As a reader, however, the book sounded more to me like a textbook rather than a novel.  Words were well written but too factual in tone. I wish there was a more creative way to add highlights to the story that would have delivered the same message that the author was trying to convey.  I also wish that there was more character development for Kat and her family. The story started out in an interesting way as we were given insight into the family’s suffering from the loss of a family member. Once RJ came back to life, the story trudged on into the logistics of working to get RJ’s message to the outside world.
Breathing in Bold is an inspirational must read for those who believe in life and the here and now, and in the role that death plays in the endless possibilities of the spirit.

“Breathing into life breathes life into us.”
